NASSCOM AND HT Horizons SERIES
“The mantra to excel in this
field is to deliver quality work,”
says K. Vijay Rao, MD, Epicenter
“IT Enabled Services (ITES)
will change the way we do business,”
feels
K.
Vijay Rao, MD, Epicenter. However
he admits that popular perception
places ITES as a temporary job option,
compared to conventional career opportunities.
“There is a great need to correct
this perception,” comments Rao
and adds, “In reality, it is
an option that has lot a of scope,
especially considering the potential
for growth as predicted by NASSCOM.”
ITES, he feels, requires an above-average
intelligence, presence of mind, patience,
analytical skills to quickly respond
to different situation. “The
work is about delivering services
and not just responding to phone calls,”
Rao says. As you move up the ITES
chain, you get the chance to pick
up diverse skills, as training is
an integral part of call centres.
Rao informs, “We are recruiting
at almost all levels, including Customer
Relation Services,” However,
out of hundreds of applications that
his company receives, Only two percent
of candidates are absorbed. This Rao
attributes to a stringent screening
process. The remuneration, of Epicenter,
is between Rs.13-20,000 at the entry
level.
Despite the fact that most call-centres
pay a decent salary, there is high
attrition rate in the ITES industry.
Rao feels that the reason for this
phenomenon is “Because people
perceive it as a temporary job and
not a career option, even it’s
high paying.
The fact is that “India is the
ITES hub – not just because
of cheap manpower and resources but
because of the high quality of talent,”
Rao observes and adds, “Otherwise,
clients could well go to Pakistan
or Bangladesh. The mantra to survive
and excel in this field is to deliver
quality work.”
